How to get rid of Tampa iguanas
Iguanas are curious creatures that have become favorite pets for reptile lovers. If gotten young enough, Tampa iguanas can be quite social and amazing pets. They typically have a calm demeanor and are brilliantly colored. However, that isn’t always the case with all iguanas.
These Florida lizards can reach over six and a half feet in length and can weigh as much as twenty pounds. Caring for these animals as a pet is challenging because they have special dietary and living needs. Iguanas originated in Central and South America, but because of their rapid reproductions, they are moving further north. They make their ways to the Caribbean islands by means of ships or even swimming. Iguanas are excellent swimmers.
While these creatures are fascinating, they are still considered an invasive species, just like rats or mice. They are drawn to places that are warm and wet; Southern Florida is a perfect place for them to live.
They aren’t naturally aggressive, but like any wild animal, if they feel threatened they will protect themselves. Their tails are powerful and can do some significant damage to a pet if they get too close. Not only are their tails a danger, but their razor-sharp teeth can pose a threat as well. Not only can they physically cause harm, but they have the potential to make humans ill. You can get diseases as well as different infections from them.
One of the most noteable illness is salmonella. Salmonella, like with most Tampa reptiles, can be transmitted through their feces. They also have long claws. If you happened to get scratched, different germs and bacteria could get into your body through the small scratches.

There are very few repellents that work with Tampa iguanas. Chances are if you have an iguana or more than one coming to your home, you’ve got something that attracted it in the first place. Iguanas are herbivores. Dense vegetation, flower beds, and gardens are some primary attractions to these lizards. They can wreak havoc on flowerbeds.
There are a couple ways to get rid of the troublesome Florida reptiles. The first option is to trap them. Remember, iguanas are potentially dangerous if they are cornered. So be sure never to try to pick one up. By placing traps filled with their favorite treats, you are inviting them to investigate. After you’ve caught one, check with your local wildlife agents to find out the best way to handle the situation.
Another way to get rid of them is to call animal control to come to your home and handle the situation for you. They are trained on how to remove the iguanas safely.
