Tampa Wildlife Education: Beaver Exterminator
The main complaint regarding beavers, stem from their proclivity for building dams. This causes flooding of farmlands and rivers. They also destroy trees in their search for materials. The flooding of farmlands and roads can lead to massive repair costs. They are seldom found in close proximity to humans as they view us as predators.
Getting rid of beavers
There are a few options available that are more humane than extermination.
· Live trapping. You will need to set these traps close to the water as beavers need access to water. It will not be easy to get close to the area that they are building as there will be copious amounts of debris littering the area. You will need to set a few traps to better your chances of apprehending the culprit. Beavers can also be found in wooded areas surrounding water. Your most prudent course of action would still be to install the traps close to the water.
· There are no effective beaver repellents so it is a futile endeavor to try this route.
· Destroying their dams and getting rid of all materials that they used is also an option. You will need to make sure that they are unable to rebuild their dam by destroying the materials that it was constructed from. Tree guards are also handy in the fight against beavers.
Extermination
If you have tried the non-lethal route and it has not succeeded you might turn to extermination. It is very difficult to kill a beaver. They are clever animals that are not easily outsmarted. Your most sensible option would be to employ a professional wildlife remover to assist you in getting rid of the beavers. There are some lethal options available to you.
· Body grip trap. This trap is installed inside the water and will slam shut on the beaver when it comes into contact with it. It is not always 100% effective and could leave you with a suffering animal. Wildlife experts are more adept at making sure the animal does not suffer.
· Shooting the animal is another convenient way of extermination. Landowners are allowed to shoot beavers that are found on their property. It is illegal to discharge most firearms close to the water as there are so many risks of ricocheting underwater. Make sure that you use a large caliber gun to prevent the beaver from suffering. Small caliber weapons often wound the beaver and leave it suffering an agonizing death.
Exclusion
The most effective way of getting rid of beavers is by making your property as uninviting as possible. A wire mesh fence can be constructed around the area that you are trying to protect. Make sure that the fence is buried at least a foot underground and check it regularly for structural issues. You can also build a drainage system over the beaver’s dam that will allow you to control where the water flows. The best way to take back control of the area is trapping and relocating.
